Flathead Valley is home to Flathead Lake, charming lakeside towns and the famous Flathead cherries.
As you crest Polson Hill (about an hour drive from Missoula), you'll be met with a view that is sure to knock your socks off. Sweep your head to the west and you'll see the Salish Mountains. Turn to your right and you'll see the jagged peaks of the Mission Mountains. Look straight ahead and you'll see the largest natural freshwater lake in the West. The view isn't all Flathead Lake has to offer; it is also home to phenomenal recreation opportunities that include fishing, sailing, or just taking a dip in the water. Situated near the west side of the lake is Wild Horse Island, a day-use state park where wild horses, bighorn sheep, coyotes, deer and a variety of birds make their home.
National Bison RangeThe National Bison Range is a 18,500-acre range and is home to about 350-500 head of bison as well as black bear, bighorn sheep, pronghorn antelope and elk. Learn more about the National Bison Range here.
St. Ignatius MissionThe St. Ignatius Mission was built in the early 1890's. This Catholic Church is unique because its walls and ceilings have 58 original paintings by Brother Joseph Carignano on them. The Mission Mountain Range is a beautiful backdrop of scenery behind the Mission Church.
Polson, MTMake a stop in Polson and pick up some famous Flathead cherries and browse the Miracle of America Museum.
Bigfork, MTThe name Bigfork is derived from the Salish name for the area. Bigfork is also a great place to pick up Flathead cherries. Bigfork sits on the shores of Flathead Lake. Cool off and take a dip in the lake.
